Instructor’s Notes: Reflections on Lesson 7 Discussions

As I promised to the class, I would post non-KEY discussion question in Lesson 8.  These are my reflections on ETC655 teaching, designing, and experiences etc.   You are NOT required to respond to these non-KEY questions.  Be sure to respond to our KEY questions.    Why am I doing this? With digital technology's rapid change, we speed up our learning.  In addition, ETC courses are offered in "accelerated" 8-week format.  We seem to catch up our digital learning constantly. Thomas Friedman said: " …the ancients believed that there was wisdom in patience and that wisdom comes from patience … Patience wasn't just the absence of speed. It was space for reflection and thought."   I hope you will join me in these non-KEY questions.   As usual, below are my reflections on each key discussion question to share with you and to advance your critical thinking and learning.   L7-KEY-1-InfoViz-Instructor's Reflections Can SNA's social graphs be considered as Info...

Pursuing a Doctoral Degree

Early this week, two students talked to me on career planning.  One of options is to pursue a doctoral degree.  Here were a few questions asked to share with you.   Before considering a doctoral degree, what should I know? Ask yourself: " what do I want to do with a doctoral degree? " Here are a few important questions to ask ourselves: • Do I enjoy conducting literature review? • Do I enjoy conducting academic research? • Am able to make the commitment for 3-5 years to complete the degree? • How is my personal financial support?   Does NAU have a doctoral program in educational technology? ETC has a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Curriculum & Instructions in Educational Technology.  You don't need to live in Flagstaff.  You can take online courses in regular semesters while come up to Flagstaff during the summer for FTF courses to fulfill the residency requirements. In fact, most C & I doctoral students don't live in Flagstaff...

Lesson 4 Discussion Reflections

Happy holidays.  I hope all you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As usual here are my reflections for our Lesson 4 discussions to share with you and to help you conclude our discussions.   My reflections include: Online Accelerated Learning; SNA Performance; Each Key Questions Reflection   Online Accelerated Learning We had active and interesting discussion on online accelerated learning. Many of you applied your "professional" knowledge to analyze it while some used personal experiences to reflect.  It is important for us to approach any discussion topic from both "professional" knowledge and personal experiences.  I like to remind us that it is more than "I like/dislike it" nor "It works or doesn't work for me."  When it comes to "instructional design" You design the instructions for instructors, students, not for your own learning. You may design it and not teach it. This is very common in higher ...

Course Evaluation doesn't seem to be active yet

Several of you brought this attention to me.  It looks like the university has not released the course evaluation yet.  It should be released soon.  Unfortunately, I, as an instructor, don't have the privilege to release or to close the survey etc.  I will suggest you could check back the course evaluation mid-week.
