Pursuing a Doctoral Degree
Early this week, two students talked to me on career planning. One of options is to pursue a doctoral degree. Here were a few questions asked to share with you.
Before considering a doctoral degree, what should I know?
Ask yourself: "what do I want to do with a doctoral degree?"
Here are a few important questions to ask ourselves:
• Do I enjoy conducting literature review?
• Do I enjoy conducting academic research?
• Am able to make the commitment for 3-5 years to complete the degree?
• How is my personal financial support?
Does NAU have a doctoral program in educational technology?
ETC has a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Curriculum & Instructions in Educational Technology. You don't need to live in Flagstaff. You can take online courses in regular semesters while come up to Flagstaff during the summer for FTF courses to fulfill the residency requirements. In fact, most C & I doctoral students don't live in Flagstaff. They continue working while pursuing their doctoral degree. https://nau.edu/coe/curriculum-instruction/
Does NAU offer any full scholarship?
I don't believe C & I offers full scholarship nor fellowship. It does have graduate assistantship and teaching assistantship that students can apply after being admitted to the program.
How ETC graduates went on doctoral program?
I don't have clear numbers. Each year, we see 1-2 ETC students start on this journey either at NAU or other universities.
If you need any advice in pursuing a doctoral degree at NAU or other colleges, feel free to talk to any ETC faculties, or me. We would be happy to assist you.
