ETC655: Lesson 6: Instructor’s Notes #1

Dear class,

I hope everything is well on your side.

Early November, I presented and attended the AECT (Association for Educational Communication & Technology), the most prestigious conference in educational technology in the world. ETC graduate students, professors, and I presented our current research projects. I noted that there are more than 60-70 papers in the topic of Social Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Social Network Analysis (SNA), learning engineering, and Data-Driven Instruction/Learning etc. What you learn in ETC655 is the top trend of educational technology.

There was one free OER book the keynote speakers covered. You many this book and chapters relevant to your eBook chapter developments, InfoDoc assignment, and future design practices.

ETC655 Course Evaluation

As I indicated in our lesson discussion, I would like us to experience a gamification design.

You had the experience of earning the extra point by completing the course evaluation in ETC645.  In ETC655, we will do the same; however, we will gamify ETC655 course evaluation later in the course.

More importantly, this gamified course evaluation was designed by the previous ETC655 students.

On top of 1 bonus point (individual service & performance), if the return rate reaches 85%, ALL students receive an additional 0.125 point, even the ones do not participate yet (collaboration & community service & performance).
If it reaches 95%, an additional 0.125 point will be added to ALL students.

Why are we doing so? This is part of an "open pedagogy" design in ETC655 that was designed by previous ETC655 students.  In fact, many current ETC655 course designs were suggested by previous students.
Let us obtain a better understanding of the designs of gamification and in using gamification to support collaboration to build effective class networks and communities.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Only a few more days to complete the course. Continue your good work; therefore, your efforts won't be proved futile.

Best Regards,

Chih
