ETC655: Support Academic Research Community

Dear ETC655 Students,

I understand that we are all busy wrapping up the course this week. However, I would like to take a moment to extend my congratulations to those of you who are graduating this semester. Some of you have asked whether I will be attending the May 12 commencement ceremony. I am pleased to confirm that I will be in attendance to offer my congratulations to you, as well as to participate in the COE Reception which will be held in honor of all graduates, their families, COE staff, and faculties. Additionally, I will be hooding one of my doctoral students, Christina Gabaldon, who just achieved her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

"Perhaps you recall Alex Miller, one of my doctoral students who actively participated in our lesson discussions. Let us demonstrate our strong sense of community and gratitude towards her contributions by encouraging participation in her dissertation study. In order to incentivize participation, we will be implementing a gamification strategy. To maintain confidentiality, Alex WILL NOT disclose the identities of the participants in her study to me. Please reach out to her directly at aem432@nau.edu to learn more about her study and the interview process."

Goal: Using community building to contribute to academic research

Gamification Theory: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 2000)

Gamification Model: Fogg Behavior Model (Fogg, 2011): Motivation, Ability and Trigger

Game Mechanics: Incentives: SECRET (Badges? Or something else? It's a secret. Let's unlock "THEM.")

Game Dynamics: Alex WILL NOT inform me about the identities of the participants in her study. Instead, she will be providing you with the incentive.

  • Engaging: To unlock the incentive, participate in Alex's interview.
  • Social: As a learning community, we can unlock an additional incentive if we reach a certain number of participants.
  • Behavioral: You can still unlock a certain incentive even if you choose not to participate in the interview. Yes, you heard it correctly.

Best Regards,

Chih
